Welcome to my Feldenkrais® blog!
The Feldenkrais Method has been so impactful on my life that I want to share the method with others so they can benefit too. Thank you for coming by to check out my site! After finding it difficult to heal from injuries from a car accident, a trusted medical professional referred me to get Feldenkrais sessions. The experience for me was a revelation. It felt as if the Feldenkrais Practitioner wasn't doing much - she was lightly moving me around. And somehow magically, I felt

DailyOM Highlights Benefits of Feldenkrais®
Writer Dana Meltzer Zepeda reports about how the Feldenkrais Method “helps to alleviate stress and chronic pain” in her August 24, 2023 article in The DailyOM. Zepeda notes that “recent research has shown that the Feldenkrais Method has been especially helpful for older adults and people with neurodegenerative diseases” and that “that the alternative movement patterns used in the Feldenkrais Method significantly improved pain, posture, functional balance and mobility, and per

Quieting the Nervous System and the Inner Critics
In my previous blog post, I wrote briefly about a frustrating foot injury that temporarily prevented me from doing what I wanted to do. Sometimes healing is on its own schedule and there isn’t much we can do to speed it up. And not everyone has the same approach to recovery. Over the years, I’ve experienced a variety of issues to recover from - some are fully resolved and others are still works in progress. I have lived through my share of injuries and health challenges. I've

Unlocking Your Inner Superhero: When to Push, When to Allow Changes to Occur Naturally
I recently injured my foot and many of my plans flew out the window. The dancing and walking I had scheduled needed to be put on hold temporarily as I hobbled due to this injury. It’s just a flesh wound, and as far as I know, there’s not much I can do to speed up my recovery. I think I mostly need to stay off my foot and give it time to heal. The unwelcome injury makes me think about resilience. I’m comforted by the thought that we’ve evolved to recover and heal. Moshe Felden

Breathe Easier, Move Better
Are you recovering from surgery or illness? Do you find that movements you used to be able to do are now restricted? Is your breathing shallow? Through some gentle Feldenkrais movements that engage you proximally (meaning, gentle movements of the ribs, shoulder blades, spine, and pelvis), you can breathe and move more easily again. I saw a client who was able to lift one arm over her head but the other arm would only go up about halfway. She’d had surgery and had lost the abi

Feldenkrais® Abroad
I haven’t traveled much in recent years, but when I do travel, I book an individual Feldenkrais session with a local Feldenkrais Practitioner whenever possible. So far, in addition to the wonderful Feldenkrais sessions I’ve experienced in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, I’ve also been lucky enough to have sessions in Florence and Venice, Italy, Santa Barbara, Hawaii, and most recently, Mexico City. Mexico City meetup between Feldenkrais Practitioners María del Carmen Hern

Five Questions to Interrupt the Pain Cycle
My original Feldenkrais Mentor is the brilliant Deborah Bowes, a Feldenkrais Trainer who has a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Dr. Bowes created five questions to ask and sense in yourself what is happening in these five places: eyes, hands, feet, breathing, and support. Where am I looking? Are my eyes fixed on one place or looking at different places? I can move my eyes and disrupt the pattern I’m in. What am I doing with my hands? Are my hands clenched or held stiffly? Move

Feldenkrais® Outdoors
There’s something special about this video which ends with Moshe Feldenkrais’ famous quote: “Make the impossible possible, the possible easy, the easy elegant.” I think the specialness lies in seeing the freedom and joy in movement and the satisfaction from being able to enjoy and explore one’s environment. This video features babies discovering developmental explorations as they begin to grab their toes, roll, crawl, creep, and pull themselves up. Also shown are Awareness Th

Reversibility at the Playground - Playing Feldenkrais® Style
There’s nothing like being a kid! Running around at the park and finding all kinds of fun places to play and explore. Ideally your children will have playtime outside in the park to climb, explore, run, and play on playground equipment. I’ll describe a jungle gym scenario and my suggestions based on principles of the Feldenkrais Method. Your 3-year-old wants to get up onto the metal playground equipment and hasn’t figured out how to ascend. He is getting frustrated as he sees

Feldenkrais® in the New York Times
The Feldenkrais Method has been featured in the news. In an October 30, 2017 New York Times article titled "Trying the Feldenkrais Method for Chronic Pain," the following are excerpts written by Paul Rogers: "After two hourlong sessions focused first on body awareness and then on movement retraining at the Feldenkrais Institute of New York, I understood what it meant to experience an incredible lightness of being. Having, temporarily at least, released the muscle tension that

Three Tips to Maximize the Benefits of your Functional Integration®
People ask how best to maintain the improvements they experience from a Feldenkrais session. The following are 3 tips to maximize your benefits from an FI: 1. Wear comfortable clothing that you can move easily in. 2. If you are mobile, budget 10-15 minutes after your session to take a walk to integrate your lesson. Allow your arms, head, and neck be as free as possible to participate fully in your walk. That ideally means no heavy bags or holding a phone to your ear while wa

Four Ways to Help Your Baby Thrive
What is the best way to support my baby's learning? Am I doing anything that prevents my child from reaching developmental milestones at an appropriate age? These questions are music to my ears. Depending on your child’s age, there are many things you can do to support your child’s development. 1. Let your infant rest on you with skin-to-skin contact. 2. Give your baby plenty of tummy time on a carpet or rug. If they seem frustrated (or even if they aren’t frustrated), get do

Push Through the Pain? A Feldenkrais® Perspective
How many times in our lives have we heard the phrase "No pain, no gain?" I have clients who explain certain pain as if they're supposed to have it from certain exercises. Muscle soreness from use I understand, some of the pain from incorrect use or pushing their bodies beyond their limits? I'm not so sure. The following is an excerpt from a New York Times article dated January 22, 2021 titled "‘Slowing Down to Feel’: Moving Our Minds Around Our Bodies" by Gia Kourlas: "It’s c

Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen?
A lot of people who seek Feldenkrais sessions may be under the care of practitioners of other modalities. Sometimes a client will comment that they’ve seen me on the same day they’ve seen their chiropractor, acupuncturist, or massage therapist. When you first start to get one-on-one Feldenkrais sessions from a Guild Certified Feldenkrais PractitionerCM, it's useful to keep the following in mind, regardless of your goals: Space out your Feldenkrais appointments from other moda
